Steve Mitchell

Born Edinburgh 1945, obtained fine Arts degree in Painting and Sculpture 1967.

ATC Cardiff University in 1968. Head of Arts Department at St. John’s College, Southsea 1968-1974 and subsequently Head of Art at Bander Seri Begawan Sixth Form College, Brunei until 1986.

A substantial collection of paintings from this period can be viewed on the Art Gaugin website.

In 1987, there came the move to Gaucin. This complete life change and sense of freedom from restriction signalled a new direction. Creative faculties were channelled into new directions. Perversely, just three paintings were completed in this period as finca and family became priorities.

This fallow period proved to be a rich provider of new ideas and fresh perspectives.

From 2015, the dozen or so paintings currently completed seem to present an on-going journey into a world of changing aspects within the canvas. This world encompasses a new sense of drama and atmosphere with notions of both movement and menace. Depth and perspective make significant contributions to the construction and scaffolding of the work.

With the sale or commissions of works to various individuals, including the Sultan of Brunei, exhibitions have been limited. This latest body of work represents a substantial tranche of my most recent paintings and owe much to maturity, the landscape and a new understanding.
