Ana Belén Montero’s artistic practice emerges from an intimate and sensory relationship with textiles. Trained at City & Guilds (Level 3) in the United Kingdom under the guidance of artists Madaleine Humphrys and Janice Gunther, her work has evolved from mastering the traditional technique of patchwork toward a contemporary exploration in which thread and dye become tools for drawing and expression.
Study and Technique
Her creative process integrates in-depth research into color and natural processes:
Global Textiles: She incorporates materials from diverse cultures, ranging from appliqué techniques inspired by the San Blas Islands to Indigo Dong fabrics produced by the Dong ethnic group in China.
The Alchemy of Color: She works with handcrafted dyes and the Japanese Shibori technique to create gradations and textures that bring volume and depth to each piece.
Free-Motion Quilting: In works such as Dreamed City, free-motion wholecloth quilting becomes the primary narrative element, where stitching not only joins layers together but also spontaneously constructs the composition itself.
Career and Recognition
Her work has played a significant role in promoting Spanish textile art within international contexts:
International Projection: Selected to represent Spain at the Pacific International Quilt Festival (PIQF) in California (2021) with her works Serenity and The Taste of Time.
European Presence: A regular participant in the Birmingham International Festival, the most prestigious event of its kind in Europe.
Notable Awards: Recipient of the First National Prize in Arcos de la Frontera (Roots) and the Award for Best Design and Quilting at the Granada International Festival (Shadow Garden).
Toward Meditative Abstraction
In her most recent phase, exemplified by Shades of Obsidian, Montero deepens an essential and contemplative vision. Textiles are transformed into a space for sensory reflection, where organic forms and balanced blocks establish a dialogue between technical structure and the spontaneity of gesture. For the artist, each work is both a vessel of memory and a conscious act that unites technique, time, and emotion.
